Let the Judging Begin!

We had a stunning +20% increase in entries over 2009 (itself a record-breaking year)! Throughout the month of July, preliminary judges will meet in Washington, D.C, New York, Denver and Los Angeles, and peer committees will convene virtually from around the world to judge well over 500 programs. We will be inviting the peer committees this week, and may need to expand a few due to a higher than expected number of entries. Judges earn complimentary registration, but must not be affiliated with any of the programs competing within the category. If you would like to be considered, please contact Lisa@jhfestival.org

Make Your Airline Reservations, Soon

The major airlines serving Jackson Hole route through Denver and Salt Lake City. They frequently cut back on flights in October due to decreased demand. We've informed them of the need to maintain service through October 9th. They will make decisions in early July on planes (with a mind toward using larger equipment on selected flights) based on the percentage of seats that are currently booked. Please consider your travel arrangements soon, so you won't be forced to drive to Idaho Falls or Salt Lake City to make a flight. As you make your plans, please keep in mind that we will host hands-on camera workshops over the weekend preceding the Festival, as well as a fantastic TEDx Jackson Hole event (refer to www.TedxJacksonHole.org for more details or to nominate a speaker).

Also In July, we will post our first-ever Ultimate Online Jackson Hole Experience Auction, with fantastic opportunities for hotels, dining, spa, fishing, adventure and truly unique Jackson Hole experiences for you and your travelling partners. So, bottom line: come early and stay late!

Film Wyoming Fam Tour -- 2011

In a whirlwind tour around Wyoming, Film Office staff took six LA-based film professionals around the northwest corner of the state last week in the semi-annual fam tour. The route started in Jackson, went through Dubois, Riverton and Shoshoni, up through Boysen State Park and Wind River Canyon to Meeteetse and Cody. From there it was on through the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway and into Yellowstone. With stops at Old Trail Town, the Buffalo Bill Dam, and Rim Rock Ranch, the visiting film industry folks got to meet with Yellowstone permitting staff, local crew, and even take the tram ride up Rendezvous Mountain at Teton Village. It was a long couple of days in the car, but finally it was time to say goodbye at Jackson Hole Airport. And by coincidence, one of our local production companies was shooting in the lobby.

All around it was a great bunch of people, a fun trip, and a big boost for Wyoming's image in Hollywood.

Why Do You Film Where You Film?

The world's film commissioners gather each year in Los Angeles, ready and eager to sell their jurisdiction to the movers and sharkers of Hollywood at the AFCI Locations Trade Show. They come from the Middle East. They come from Asia. From Europe. From every American state. And each year we hear the same question: Why don't they just call it Incentives Trade Show?

There's a prevailing sense among the long time film commissioners that the industry has changed. This used to be a business where locations mattered. If you had the right photography, you had a shot. But more and more film commission work seems like a numbers game. If you can offer the biggest incentive, you get the biggest projects.

What do you think, dear reader? Why do you film where you film? Do you look at the locations first or at the economics? Sound off in the comments!

Producers Guild of America's Third Annual Produced By Conference in Association with AFCI Locations Huge Success

MORE THAN 2,200 ATTENDEES AND OVER 300 FILM COMMISSIONS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE

LOS ANGELES (June 6, 2011) – The Producers Guild of America (PGA) and the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) announced today that more than 2,200 people attended the third annual Produced by Conference (PBC) in conjunction with the AFCI Locations Show held June 4-5, 2011 at The Walt Disney Studios. For the first time, the 2011 PBC brought acclaimed producers and industry veterans along with hundreds of film commissions together to interact with an astonishing number of participants—more than double the number of attendees from last year’s PBC. With speakers like Harvey Weinstein, Lawrence Gordon, Kevin Smith, Mark Gordon, Darren Star, Robert Greenblatt, Tim Gibbons and many more, over 100 masters of their craft shared their expertise as attendees were endlessly inspired throughout the two-day celebration. In addition to riveting panel sessions and conversations, attendees were delighted with the unique exposure and interaction with film commission exhibitions from around the globe spread throughout the Disney lot.

Reaching across film, television and new media industries, the annual Produced By Conference is an educational forum that involves acclaimed producers, including countless Academy Award®-winning filmmakers and Emmy Award® winners, as well as the next generation of creative entrepreneurs. The AFCI Locations Show is an annual gathering of film commissions from around the globe representing over $2 billion in financing and incentives. The PBC event was chaired by Marshall Herskovitz, Gale Anne Hurd and Rachel Klein. Further information on this year’s event can be found at www.producedbyconference.com.
